European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
