The Gaming Giant Recruits Popular Battle Royale Developer to Revitalize Challenged Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Transition Follows Lukewarm Response

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming unveiling last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the requirement for a more defined direction.

The president noted that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Hires

This announcement mirrors a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to work on the beloved franchise development group.

Here is the full message from the president's announcement:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just finished your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Previously I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative creators we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that relationship to endure.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was informative. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the need for a sharper vision.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the input to consideration and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to deliver on its promise to our audience.

The belief in this project strengthens every day. To boost the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the new Lead of 31st Union. Following a period of discussions, he officially joins us on next week.

Ben’s leadership and expertise in the PVP shooter space is vast, having spent the last 15 years creating and leading some of the most well-known titles in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in greeting Ben soon. We are all eager to continue seeing the evolution of Project ETHOS in the time to follow.

The President

Background of the Incoming Leader

The appointee currently serves in the role of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in various production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at other industry leaders.

Game Details and Vision

Project Ethos was unveiled in last year together with a early access event. Then, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the official summary explains. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, risks, and tests that evolve every round. Do you safely extract with your valuable rewards? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and hope your group can secure victory? The option is in your hands."

The game does not have an official release date or consoles, but players can anticipate more updates as development continues.
